Pools & Waterslides
Fernie Aquatic Centre, located in town, features a six lane competition pool with diving board. For a little fun, they also offer waterslides, tarzan swing, family pool with spray fountains as well as a hot tub and steam room.
Hikes & Walks
Surrounded by the Canadian Rockies, Fernie has an abundance of hikes and walks for you to enjoy. Close to town, the Ancient Cottonwood Interpretive Trail and the Rail Trail are popular for easy walking. For more of an outing, we suggest hiking Castle Mountain or Mount Proctor/Fair Creek.
Fernie boasts both an indoor and outdoor skating rink each winter season as well as many frozen ponds. Looking for a night out with the kids? Rent some skates and off you go! Enjoy hot chocolate and beautiful mountain views as you carve figure eights or little pick up game of hockey. Snowshoeing in Fernie allows you to experience the snowy mountain bike trails in wintertime. Strap on your shoes and head up to Island Lake Loge for a beautiful walk around the lake. Book a tour or try some discovery of your own up Coal Creek Road. Why not pack a picnic and enjoy the serenity and amazing views of Fernie Alpine Resort, Mt Fernie and Mt Hosmer. Remember to always let someone know where you are going and take a map and compass.
Swimming & Beaches
There are a variety of area swimming holes the locals and regular visitors recreate at. Choose from five lakes in the area ranging from small lakes with sandy beaches like Surveyor's, 30 minutes south of Fernie, or the larger Koocanusa Lake popular for swimming and watersports.
The Elk River and its tributaries, a freestone river system above the town of Elko, is pristine territory for Westslop Cutthroat Trout and other native fish species. While the catch is important, there is no doubt that the beautiful mountain scenery adds to the angler's experience. Excursions are available through Mountain High River Adventures and Canyon Raft Company. Canoeing and kayaking the area's three main rivers is a great option as well.
Challenge your skills while trying to paddle upstream or do as the locals do and just float your way from Hosmer downstream to Fernie Alpine Resort. Looking for something more adventurous? Local operators can provide you with a guided day of kayaking, from mild trips to wild. Kayaks or canoes can be hired in town so pack you bag and get here.
Whether an avid enthusiast or a first timer check out the snowmobile tours and rental and service companies in Fernie. With vast terrain to explore from family friendly groomed trails to expert backcountry the Fernie area has it all. The perfect place to start is Coal Creek Staging Area. Rent sleds for a group and have a day exploring the mountains that surround Fernie. Guided Tours can be booked for as little as 2 hours to a full day. If you are heading out on your own, please familiarize yourself with the local regulations and avalanche conditions.
Fernie boasts an 18-hole golf course in one of the most spectacular settings in the Canadian Rockies. Rated as one of the top 25 of BC courses, this golf course is very playable for the beginner or average golfer but also offers great challenges for the better player.

Fernie offers kilometres of Nordic ski trails to explore, from beginner circuits to the more advanced. A number of trails are set around Fernie including those at Fernie Alpine Resort. Or take in the trails in town, along the beautiful Elk River and at the Fernie Golf & Country Club where you can enjoy amazing views of the surrounding mountains.
Seen from the Valley, the Lizard Range rises to a series of spiky peaks. Beyond the ridge, the elevation keeps rising to the playground of two of Fernie's snowcat operators. The magnificent peaks of the Lizard Range in the BC Rocky Mountains tower over 7,000 acres of privately owned bowls, valleys & gladed meadows, perfect for skiing/boarding.
